Hamami i Gazi Mehmed Pashës

Built in 1563-74 by Gazi Mehmet Pasha, Sandzakbej of Shkodra, the hammam is located in the centre of the city. The hammam has for centuries been an inseparable part of the life of the citizens of Prizren and has become a spiritual and cultural symbol. The hammam is characterized by a structure of 20 domes; the two larger domes are covered with tiles, while the other smaller domes and vaults are covered with lead tiles. The hammam has all the spaces that are normally included in such (couples) hammams and consists of the entrance - wardrobe (waiting area and for drinks), the interconnecting part, the preparation for washing and sanitary nodes, the central part where the washing was done, sweating , amusement and the part of the boiler located in the southern part of the building. The hammam is unique in architectural and cultural terms combining local architectural and oriental traditions, giving the building a distinctive and autochthonous image for these areas. Based on its historical, artistic, scientific, spiritual and rarity values, the Gazi Mehmed Pasha was proclaimed a site under permanent protection by the Kosovo Council for Cultural Heritage in 2016.
