Manastiri i Graçanicës

It is located in the centre of Gracanica. Today’s monastery is a reconstruction of a 14th century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which church was built on the substructure of an early Christian basilica of 6th century. The largest restoration on monastery was made by the end of the 16th century, where all openings in the outer narthex were walled and new frescoes were painted. Famous painters Mihajl and Evtihije from Thessaloniki have finished frescoes in the main church by 1321, of which the Great Cycle Holidays, Passion and Miracles of Christ are the most popular. The interior of the monastery is rich of frescoes. The Monastery of Gracanica is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Based on historical, artistic, social, spiritual values, the Monastery of Gracanica in 2016 was proclaimed in permanent protection by the Kosovo Council for Cultural Heritage.
