Manastiri i Deçanit

Monastery of Decan was built in the first part of the 14th century. Based on the inscription engraved on the lintel of the southern portico in the narteks (hajati) of the church it was built in the period 1327-1335. Monastery of Decan is located in the west of Kosovo, in the municipality of Decan to the Valley of Lumbardh River. The church along with the dome is 32 m high, during the medieval period is known as Deçani i Lartë. From the exterior, the church building is a mix of Roman and Gothic styles, while the interior is covered with traditional, Orthodox and Byzantine orthodox styles. The monastery is a monumental, with five dome-covered berths, which stands on drum and three aniad-narthex. In the Church there are also two special chancels. One in the northern part of the Church of St. Demetrius, while the other on the south side of the Church of St. Nicholas. The main architect of Monastery of Decan was the master Fra Vito from Kotor, a Franciscan monk who decorated the monastery with many items that make the Romanesque more special. At the same time, the Monastery of Decan is rich in frescos from the 19th century. The monastery has a rich treasure trove of expansive exhibits of great museum value. In these collections should be emphasized icons, manuscript books and various subjects in use for liturgical ceremonies. The Monastery of Decan is part of the UNESCO world cultural heritage protection. Based on historical, artistic, social and spiritual values, the property of Cultural Heritage, Monastery of Decani in 2016 was proclaimed in permanent protection by the Kosovo Council for Cultural Heritage.
