Kalaja e Korishes

The Korisha Fortress is located in the southeast of the village of Korisha, in a dominant position over Prizren valley and the entire Dukagjini plain. The prehistoric and ancient settlement of Korisha has archaeological and historical values. It dates from prehistoric periods, late antiquity to the early Byzantine period. The archaeological excavations carried out in 2002 and 2004 on the hill of Korisha Fortress, known by the microtoponym of Gralishta revealed the plan of a Paleo Christian church of the sixth century. The church in question is within the inner area of the fortress, with an abscess directed to the east. Traces of a synchron constructed in scalable and trapezoidal shape were identified in this part. Parts of a railing were also identified within the altar area. As far as the archaeological moving material is concerned, some ceramic pottery fragments of prehistoric dating probably associated with the site in the middle of the middle bronze period, as well as fragments of various vessels such as amphora, pithoi, jars, jugs, etc., dating to late antiquity – the sixth century – were revealed. Special features of the castle, in addition to the surrounding wall, are four 25-40 m long walls that descend from the four sides of the castle, at the bottom part of which there are remains of protective towers. Based on archaeological and historical values, the Korisha Castle fortress in 2016 was proclaimed in permanent protection by the Kosovo Council for Cultural Heritage. Based on its historical and scientific values, the Korisha Fortresss was proclaimed a site under permanent protection by the Kosovo Council for Cultural Heritage in 2016.
